Installing MSSQL 2005
There are still lots of Mircosoft programs that only support MSSQL 2005. The problem occurs when you only have Server 2008 as the standard MSSQL 2005 isn’t supported on Server 2008, only SP2 works on Server 2008. You may have a problem as when you download MSSQL 2005 from Microsoft the install does not have SP2 slip streamed into it. So when you install MSSQL 2005 without SP2 slipstreamed you have aproblem and the installation will fail. From my experience though you can ignore this error as it will come at the end of the installation, make sure during the installation wizard you un-tick the option to start the Services. Once installed now you can apply the SP2 patch reboot you server and then set up the services to automatically start. One other problem is using th Reporting Services I have come accross an error the applicaton pool doesnt work, if this hapens you can select the Classic .Net App Pool application pool and this should work.
Now fill out all the other stages for reporting services and the installation is complete
Uninstalling MSSQL 2005
Another problem i have come across is uninstalling MSSQL 2005 from Server 2008. This error occurs towards the end of the uninstall and can be really annoying. If you pay close attention the uninstall will fail when uninstalling reporting Services. To over come this it is quite easy just stop all IIS services and perform the unnstall again. Thats it MSSQL 2005 should now uninstall without a problem.
